JNJ Universal Tooling Assemblies for MPM Printers

The Universal Tooling Plates are available in two styles: UTP-1100 Rev H For UP-2000 and AP Series Machines - UAYTP-1100 For UP-2000 and AP Series machines with the Y Snugger Option.

Universal Tooling Plate Assembly: JNJ Industries' Universal Tooling Plate Assembly has been designed to retrofit directly into an MPM (Speedline®) AP Series and UP-2000 series stencil printers. There are several different models of tooling plate assemblies, each of which is meant to mount onto a particular MPM (Speedline®) printer. The Universal Tooling Plate assembly provides precise, repeatable set ups for single and double sided boards. Set-up information can be stored on set up sheets or as part of a Unicam software template. Standard magnetic based tooling from MPM does not allow operators to record or repeat a previous set up, and can take over 30 minutes to figure out a board set up. JNJ's universal tooling plate with offline set up fixture reduces this time to less than 5 minutes.

Y Snugger Option - UAYTP-1100: For those AP series and UP 2000 printers with the MPM “Y-Snugger” option installed, JNJ offers the UAYTP-1100 MPM Universal Tooling Assembly. Designed on the same basis as the UTP-1100 and ATP-1100, the UAYTP-1100 provides 100% repeatable Set Up and Quick Change over. Like the other Tooling Assemblies, the UAYTP-1100 comes with an Offline Tooling Fixture; Hard anodized plate and 20 board supports. Utilizing the existing vacuum from the MPM printer, the UAYTP-1100 installs in 60 minutes and is ready for use in production lines immediately after installation. The UAYTP-1100 plate has been field-tested and customer approved.

Tooling Plate with PC Board: The universal tooling plate is shown here holding an 8" x 10" PC board. The system utilizes the vacuum system that comes with the MPM printer, and there are optional pneumatic snuggers and fixed snuggers to hold the board during the print cycle. The adjustable vacuum chucks have thumbscrews for all of the adjustable parts, which help to speed up set up and change over. There are 1100 board support locations, each with a plug to keep the whole locations filled, so that solder paste and other debris cannot fall into the holes when they are not in use. Alphanumeric scales provide positional information to record board set up data.

Tooling Plate Close-up, Corner View: Shown here is a close-up of the board supports, adjustable vacuum chucks, and pneumatic snugger assemblies. The pneumatic snuggers are an optional item used to clamp the board edges when vacuum hold down is not sufficient. Note that the board support pins come in concentric and eccentric styles, allowing for a broader range of support pin locations. In some cases, the eccentric pins can add more flexibility for densely populated boards. A board sensor bracket is shown in the center, and is one of 2 style brackets that come with the system. There is also a sensor bracket which slides in a "T"-slot in the front fixed vacuum rail.

Tooling plate Close-up, End View: This end view of the vacuum chuck assembly shows the thumbscrews, which are used to hold the various tooling plate accessories in place. Operators simply loosen the thumbscrews and slide the vacuum chucks, snugger assemblies, or other devices into the desired position, and tighten them by hand, without requiring any tools. This makes setup and change over even faster.

Offline Setup Fixture: The "offline setup fixture" that comes standard with JNJ's universal tooling plate assembly is used to configure the board support locations, conveyor rail, and vacuum chuck positions for double sided PC boards, without interrupting an existing manufacturing line. There are scales located along the X and Y-axes, an adjustable rail that simulates the stencil printer's adjustable conveyor rail, and a print out of the tooling plate matrix embedded in transparent Plexi-glass that emulate JNJ's universal tooling plate assembly as it would appear inside the stencil printer. The black circles on the transparency represent the board support pins as they would appear in a designated position on the tooling plate assembly. If one of the small circles in the transparency lines up with a bottom side component, then a set up person would know that it is not OK to place a board support in that location. The Universal tooling Plate assembly accommodates boards ranging from 4" x 4", up to 16" x 16". The offline tooling plate assembly accommodates the same size boards as the universal tooling plate assembly.

This unique and patent pending design makes even the most densely populated easy to set up. With board support pins positioned in safe areas of the board, rework due to damaged components is eliminated.
